Hand Drumming and Indian Rhythm Institute – Beginner and Intermediate Levels

An exciting, weeklong course in hand drumming and Indian rhythm for students of all ages and skill levels. The institute will provide a general introduction to the history, theory, culture, and performance of Indian music and rhythm, and concentrate on Carnatic music, an ancient form of classical music from South India. Participants will gain hands-on experience playing several traditional instruments, including the pitched mridangam, the primary drum of South India, as well as other hand drums including the khanjira frame drum, ghatam clay jug drum, and konakkol, a unique system of vocal percussion. Students will also explore and create innovative intersections between hand drumming, Indian rhythm, and their primary musical instruments and styles. The institutes will culminate in an interactive concert featuring traditional and contemporary works.
