"Virtual Gurukulavasa: Online Music Pedagogy in South Indian Percussion"

South Indian classical or Carnatic music is one of the oldest and most complex musical traditions in the world. In the last decade, many teachers in India and abroad have begun offering private lessons via real-time net-conferencing software such as Skype and Google Hangout. This digital trend illuminates the exciting intersection of globalization, diaspora, and technology. While the pedagogical repertoire may largely be the same for in-person and online lessons, the pedagogical techniques differ in significant ways. Jay Appaji, a high school student in Dallas who has been learning South Indian percussion from Rohan for over five years, will speak about his experiences learning in-person and online. The presentation will conclude with a percussion duet by Rohan and Jay.
